John Kafalas: Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba
I've performed as a freelance trombone and tuba
player from 1981 to the present. This has included many settings:
orchestral, chamber music, traditional jazz, big bands, blues,
bluegrass/folk, and occasional solo performance.

Studied trombone with Charles Raymond, Tom
Everett, and Mike Lake; piano with Boaz Heilman; tuba with Blase
Scarnati. Attended week-long master classes given by Arnold
Jacobs at Trenton St. College, 1989-90.

Performed in Worcester, MA premiere of Berlioz
Requiem with orchestra and chorus conducted by F. John
Adams, 1985.

Played euphonium in Holst's The Planets
with Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra, 1990.

Member of Stan McDonald's Blue Horizon Jazz
Band, 1988-89. Appeared at Down East Jazz Festival, Camden, ME, 1988.

Performed with New Bedford Symphony, Thayer
Conservatory Orchestra, Greater Marlborough Symphony, North Shore
Philharmonic, Mystic Valley Orchestra, Concord Orchestra, Harvard Wind
Ensemble, and other Massachusetts symphonic groups, 1981-94.

Appeared frequently with Jimmy Mazzy &
Friends, 1984-94. Also made freelance appearances with other
traditional jazz musicians including Robin Verdier, Lee Childs, Ray
Smith, Scott Philbrick, Jeff Hughes, Michael Feldman, and other
Boston-area notables during that time.

Recorded horn tracks on Lighten Up, This
Ain't Brain Surgery, by United Snakes (blues band), 1990. Made
several cable TV appearances with Rob Carlson (guitar/vocalist).

Played tuba and trombone with Jack Webb New
Orleans Jazz Band, Flagstaff, AZ, 2000-4. Appeared at Motorola Chandler
Jazz Festival, Chandler, AZ, 2001.

Currently doing occasional solo and ensemble
performances in services at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany,
Flagstaff, AZ. Also currently a member of Northern Arizona University
Trombone Choir.
